Forest Wandering

The theatre, built in the late 18th century, hosts the Forest Wanderings installation across its three underground floors, which are connected to the ground-floor reception via a teardrop-shaped spiral staircase. Descending to the first underground level, at the upper circle of the theatre, the gallery is populated by More–So Rock Pieces, a collection of limited-edition ottomans and footstools resembling lichen-covered rocks, which also designed by Front. Their appearance tricks the eyes into believing large, rugged boulders are resting before them, but the illusion is dispelled when touch gives in to curiosity and their unexpected softness and comfort come to the foreground. Journeying to the lower level, the shapes of the bodies that inhabit it are smooth, like pebbles in a riverbed displaying different shape, sizes, and hues. The colours of moss, foliage, and turf cover the surfaces of Pebble Rubble, cloaking them in the palette of the under wood thanks to Arda, Kvadrat’s knitted fabric. Finally, on the last floor, Pebble Rubble is arranged on the stage, its surfaces displaying images of the wilderness.

Here Pebble Rubble mimics smooth rocky bodies, gently shaped over the course of millennia, resting on top of one another, and is the centrepiece of the performance. Its white surfaces host tailored projections of nature’s elements responsible for polishing them. A soundtrack accompanies these scenes of a dynamic, living environment; a stream coursing through the woodland, the clatter of pebbles rolling and bumping into one another, the peace of a jewelled night sky. A performance that takes the viewer into the cycle of tireless forces that act upon these stones throughout the years and takes the visitor through a journey of discovery, research and rediscovery of the healing power of nature.
